AWRM Recommended Reading List

In this thread will review numerous books we consider "essential" reading material. While there is a seemingly endless supply of information on the internet, it may not always be available; so everyone should have a survival library based on paper.

We will cover several key areas.

Top Ten:

1. Constitutional Homeland security
by Jr. Edwin Vieira
https://www.amazon.com/Constitutional-Homeland-Security-Nation-Arms/dp/0967175925

"Homeland security" is the most serious issue challenging Americans today. How they deal with this problem will determine whether the United States will preserve individual liberty and economic prosperity, or degenerate into a centralized bureaucratic police state. This book explains why "the Militia of the several States" are the only establishments the Constitution explicitly empowers to provide the crucial elements of homeland security. And it describes the practical steps Americans should take to revitalize the constitutional Militia in each of the States.

2. Resistance to Tyranny
by Col. Joseph P. Martino 432 pages $18.00

https://www.amazon.com/Resistance-Tyranny-Joseph-P-Martino/dp/1450574289

This book is a primer on armed resistance to tyranny. It is intended to answer questions the reader might not think of asking, and to direct the reader to sources of more detailed information. Topics covered include justifying revolt, conditions for success, possible government responses, strategy & tactics, the overt and covert organizations, weapons, equipment, survival skills, land navigation, camouflage, boobytraps, weapons caching, training, secure camps, safe houses, communications, encryption &; codes, gaining public support, sniping, sabotage, raids, intelligence and counter-intelligence. It is intended for scholarly information purposes only.

3. The Survival Group Handbook: How to Plan, Organize and Lead People For a Short or Long Term Survival Situation
By Charley Hogwood 305 pages

https://www.amazon.com/Survival-Gro...amp;refRID=7NBBY04EB9BRHNB0W1W E

The Survival Group Handbook (formerly known as MAGS: The People Part of Prepping, is the first and most comprehensive book ever written on the subject of survival with others.

It is designed to walk you through all the steps required to safely and securely find, and work with other people just like you who realize that going it alone in a dark world is not an option.

This guide is the instruction manual and reference textbook for the solo survivor, family or national organization regardless of size or mission.

By employing the hard learned lessons carefully researched in cooperation with many active groups, and applying sociology, history, law and threat analysis, the survivor will understand what makes a group work, how to build one from scratch, how to fix one that has become dysfunctional and where to put your group in a hurry.

If you want to put a razor's edge on your team, understand how to effectively lead people, increase participation, correct poor group dynamics, and be able to successfully operate under a multitude of conditions, this book holds all the keys to your success.

4. Holding Your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it All Falls Apart
By Joe Nobody 172 pages $19.93
https://www.amazon.com/Holding-Your-Ground-Preparing-Defense/dp/0615497551

HOLDING YOUR GROUND is an instructional guide and planning tool that addresses defensive preparation of a location. If the government can no longer protect your home, farm or property, HOLDING will teach you how. HOLDING covers virtually every aspect of protecting you and your family in the event society breaks down. Many people have preparations for food, water, shelter and personal defense. HOLDING will teach you how to configure your home, train your team, and properly equip any location for defense. Covering topics ranging from hiding in plain sight to pre-positioning of supplies, HOLDING uses common sense, military tactics and historical examples that allow you to prepare for defense without affecting your property's value or appearance.

HOLDING YOUR GROUND is written for people who prepare for a time when two critical situations become reality:

1. The Government no longer provides security, such as the police, either locally or nationally.

2. There is a disruption in the food supply.

The reason or cause really doesn't matter. It could be natural disasters, economic collapse, social upheaval, EMP attack, pandemic, or any other doomsday scenario you can think of. If Law Enforcement is no longer there and people are hungry, ugly things can happen.

We Preppers are normally peaceful people who simply want to grow our food, raise our children and perhaps contribute to the re-building of our society should such events occur. Unfortunately, not everyone prepares, and that means there may be haves and have not's.

Every society has some economic division of its people and for the most part, they co-exist without issue. When it comes to FOOD, the chances of a peaceful existence between those who have and those who don't is low. We live in a free, well-armed society, and that means if trouble does erupt - it will probably be violent.

HOLDING uses several military terms and concepts and these can be intimidating for some people. Fortunately for our society, our military and law enforcement have handled the "dirty work" of protecting us for hundreds of years. Since we are planning for a world where they will no longer provide that security, we need to learn some of their skills. They have established a very specific terminology to teach these skills, and it works. While I could not justify reinventing their "educational wheel," a serious attempt is made to communicate in "laymen's" terms wherever practical. All of us may need to think a little more than like a soldier or policeman.

If you are "a little past your prime," HOLDING can help you "hide in plain sight" and avoid trouble whenever possible. I, personally, fall into this category and while I could still put up a good fight, combat is for younger men. HOLDING can teach you how to set up your location (Bug Out or In) so that you can have the best chance of surviving even the worst situations.

If you are part of a "young family," HOLDING will provide you with several ideas to assist you with your plan and the options available to you. A TEOTEAWKI life with younger children is a completely different situation than an all-adult group. The potential issues regarding those precious young ones are considered throughout.

If you are part of a large, geographically close family or group, HOLDING will provide valuable information on how to utilize your team's size and capabilities. Regardless of your age, the size of your group, where you are located and what your physical capabilities are - HOLDING can teach you certain basics that may make the difference if it all falls apart.

5. Contact! A Tactical Manual for Post Collapse Survival
by Max Velocity

https://www.amazon.com/Contact-Tactical-Manual-Collapse-Survival/dp/1478106697

600 pages: REVISED & EXPANDED SECOND EDITION This manual is the result of a detailed consideration of a societal collapse and the civil shift and aftermath that would impact individuals and families who are intent on survival. The purpose of this manual is to provide information to enhance the security, tactics, and survival skills of law-abiding citizens who are faced with civil disorder, lawlessness, violence, and physical threat in a post-collapse environment. The information in this manual is derived from training and experience gained from service with special operations forces (SOF) and subsequent employment as a security contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is a distillation of tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) adapted to the threat and environment anticipated in this type of scenario, in order to provide the knowledge needed to survive in a world turned upside down. It is no longer just survival of the fittest but survival of those prepared. The manual will take you from self-defense as an individual, team and family, and on to tactics, techniques, procedures and training that can be used by tactical teams that you may need to form in order to survive or to resist tyranny. In a serious post-event scenario, one of total collapse with several months or years before recovery, families, groups and communities may be forced to create such tactical defense forces to protect personnel, loved ones and resources against hostile forces. There is something in this manual for both the tactical newbie and the military veteran. Authors Website: maxvelocitytactical.com Author's blog: maxvelocitytactical.com\blog

10. Lights On: The Non-technical Guide to Battery Power When the Grid Goes Down
By Jeffrey R. Yago 240 pages $9.25
https://www.amazon.com/Lights-Non-t...to+Battery+Power+When+the+Grid+Goes+Down

Following the simple plans in Lights On will ensure that you are safe and secure during widespread long-term power outages. The US electric grid is at greater risk today than ever before. From aging infrastructure, severe weather, and EPA mandated closure of coal-fired power plants to solar storms, digital sabotage, terrorism, and electromagnetic pulse attacks, future outages are almost certain. And they will likely last far longer and cover much larger areas than anything experienced in the past. When the grid is down and you run out of fuel for your generator, and all the stores are closed, then what? Lights On has the solution. Energy expert Jeffrey Yago lays out the lost history of early residential battery power and delves into just how durable and universal battery-powered devices are. Battery-powered devices can provide lighting, communications, refrigeration, safety, and entertainment when all else fails. Yago covers the multiple ways to keep your batteries recharged and ready to go. There are many books and magazines on emergency preparedness, survival, solar power, and disaster planning, which show strong public interest in these topics. However, many offer brief introductions to each topic. Lights On provides easy-to-understand detailed information on having a plan of action for setting up a battery-powered home in advance of widespread and sustained power outages. This is the only book you need to be prepared to keep your refrigerator running, your lights on, and much more.

Live Off the Land in the City and the Country by Ragnar Benson.

I don't necessarily agree with everything in the book, but it's a great introduction to surviving when things go bad. Try some of the traps and snares, find what edible wild foods are in your area, and it even has little bit about brain tanning pelts.

It's a great introduction, and hopefully it will inspire you to learn more, and especially practice what you learn.

Peterson Field Guide to Animal tracks , the third edition of the classic guide by Olaus Murie. If you're a hunter or trapper, or are just curious about what critters are around, this is the best of the field guides.

Onward and upward,
