“Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the Chinese state-run Global Times, tweeted a call for war after Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) mistakenly tweeted that there are 30,000 U.S. troops currently stationed in Taiwan. In a now-deleted tweet sent on Tuesday.”

“Now, the US and the Taiwan authorities must explain. If it is true that the US has 30,000, or less than that number, soldiers stationed on the Taiwan island, Chinese military forces will immediately launch a war to eliminate and expel the US soldiers.”

“Someone said that @JohnCornyn mistook that number by using the number of previous US troops stationed on Taiwan island before China and the US set up diplomatic relations. I think the senator is not confused, and he wants to test our response. My answer to him is war.”

China's doing a little thumb-nosing at us. They saw how we left Afghanistan, and they're trying to convince Taiwan that Biden will do the same thing to them. And China's probably not wrong.

I disagree. Beijing may be utilizing the situation for propaganda purposes, but PRC does intend to capture and annex ROC once practical. If USA were to begin massing thousands of soldiers in ROC, the likelihood that PRC would strike is high. Mind you, Beijing is responding to a recent statement made by a senior US Senator and member of the Intelligence Committee. It would be unwise to simply dismiss such a statement, especially without explanation. I expect that at this moment MSS, JSIB and SSF are reviewing intelligence for indications that such a buildup is occurring. Chinese IC is also likely attempting to determine why Cornyn made that statement. I do note that PRC was quick to argue USA’s abandonment of its puppet in Kabul and therefore Taipei can expect the same, though it’s likely that’s now quickly transitioned to Chinese IC scrambling in response to an indication that thousands of American soldiers may be staged in Taiwan as we speak. Therefore, we appear to observe a PSYOP. Perhaps Beijing will arrive at a similar assessment. Perhaps not.

Quote
“We sternly demand an immediate explanation from the US government on Cornyn's tweet, as well as an immediate explanation from the Taiwan authorities. If there truly are 30,000 US troops in Taiwan, or even fewer than that, it would be an extremely serious situation that crosses China's red-line. Those US troops must withdraw from the island immediately and unconditionally, and both the US government and the Taiwan authorities should publicly apologize for this. Otherwise, we believe that an all-out war across the Taiwan Straits will break out quickly, and the Chinese People's Liberation Army will wipe out the US forces, liberate the island of Taiwan, and settle the Taiwan question once and for all.”

Yep, China has been rattling sabers with Taiwan for decades, and they will undoubtedly test Biden's resolve now. But I think they're going to wait and see how Afghanistan plays out before they do much more than talk.

There are reports the Afghan vice president has not fled the country as earlier reported, but has joined forces with the old Northern Alliance, and there are even more rumors the president has done the same. I think China is a little concerned about a civil war near their border, and they're not in to much of a hurry to start something right away.

Are you wondering what Biden will do if China attacks Taiwan? You can quit wondering. We'll go to war.

Quote
President Joe Biden said Monday that the United States would intervene militarily if China attempts to take Taiwan by force, a warning that appeared to deviate from the deliberate ambiguity traditionally held by Washington.
The White House quickly downplayed the comments, saying they don't reflect a change in US policy. It's the third time in recent months -- including during a CNN town hall in October -- that Biden has said the US would protect Taiwan from a Chinese attack, only to have the White House walk back those remarks.
During a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, Biden was asked if the US would be willing to go further to help Taiwan in the event of an invasion than it did with Ukraine.

"You didn't want to get involved in the Ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons. Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that?" a reporter asked.

"Yes," Biden replied. "That's the commitment we made."

"We agree with the One China policy. We signed on to it, and all the attendant agreements made from there, but the idea that it can be taken by force, just taken by force, is (just not) appropriate," he said.
Under the "One China" policy, the US acknowledges China's position that Taiwan is part of China, but has never officially recognized Beijing's claim to the self-governing island of 23 million. The US provides Taiwan defensive weapons, but has remained intentionally ambiguous on whether it would intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack....
