What are your plans when the grid goes completely dark? Do you understand what is expected to happen? It's not only the risk of an EMP at this point. DHS has warned about substation attacks.

If you haven't invested in a generator yet, now might be a good time.

I would not have a generator. The sound of a running generator is an announcement to thieves that you have things worth stealing. With no electricity at the pumps you can't by more fuel to run a generator. Gas stations don't have back up generators. There are many ways to get by without electricity as we did in the 1800's.

Backups here are solar. Generator is a last resort for short term use only.

No one is going to use a generator long term. But short term, it buys you time - especially when you may be preoccupied with other things, as may be the case with a natural or man-made disaster. And you're not going to want to can everything in your refrigerator and freezer if you know power will be back up in 48 hours.

As luck would have it, I put my theory to the test after a strong storm knocked out our power for a couple days. I ran mine for a few hours a day, and let a couple neighbors borrow it when I wasn't using it. No problem!

It's incredible how some people were reacting to this, you would have thought it was the end of the world. I didn't even have electricity at all until I was eight years old. It really makes me wonder how some people would have survived Oklahoma a hundred years ago.
