SERE course - 11/27/2006 07:31 AM

my team (2 man team on KISSATA principals)is planning to take the following course from a former SERE instructor in feb, here in VA. (www.mountainshepherd.com)though firearms are prohibited, we figure the knowledge and skills are valuable, esp if we are put on the run w/o weapons.

A survival course for adults that includes extreme map & compass hiking while performing escape & evasion tactics. 4-days, 3-nights (Thur. 10 am - Sun. noon); Co-ed, 18+. Training will emphasize the ability to evade while caring for basic needs. Avoiding detection while moving will be practiced. Participants should be in good physical condition. Day One will consist of hands-on training to include all seven survival priorities; Day Two will consist of map & compass, camouflage and concealment, hiding spot selection, evasion shelters (hides), and evasion movement techniques. On Day Three students will begin their escape and evasion exercise which will utilize an aggressor force and partisan network. This exercise will continue until the end of training on Day Four. Applicable exercise goals are to successfully evade capture and locate an assigned rescue point. A complete equipment list will be sent upon registration.

This sounds like an outstanding course. I would be interested in your AAR. You know, from a complete non-tactical POV, this type of training would be outstanding for anyone that spends time in the wilderness.

When I was in Boy Scouts, our troop was organized in Navy housing. Our troop leaders were all active-duty military and every camp out we had included survival training. Too bad most troops don't get that. Even the local scouts that do their Wilderness Survival merit badge usually do it at Scout Camp and get just a basic introduction into these theories.

thanks alma, iam not too savy on abbreviations but what is AAR? i contacted them and they sent the equipment list and its pretty much just basic essentials. we are looking forward to the course and hopefully it snows just to add to the training. as a team we have not been able to hit the woods due to hunting in our AO, but we have been reviewing basic essentials and material in a class type setting.

take care,

Ghettoct; Just in the case you don't know how to do an AAR, here's a simple rule:

EACH individual involved in an action, sits down, (AFTER THAT ACTION IS OVER...ASAP) and writes EVERYTHING that transpired, happened, right/wrong, didn't happen, right/wrong, and observations as to how the others responded, right/wrong, and how the MISSION developed, & if the goals were met, etc.

ALSO, you should explain the "WHYS & WHY NOTS" of each circumstance that you describe. And then, any suggestions you have for a better MISSION PROFILE...or ACTION.

Such a report should be WHOLEY,(as possible) void of emotional jargon & attitude.

Simply the facts, both of what happened, what you did & saw, & what you derived from the experience. The "DOS", & "DON'TS".

Hopw that helps you guys help us...
