Organizing Your Stores...

Organizing Your Stores... - 07/11/2007 11:33 PM

Does anyone have a method of organizing your stores?
I was thinking of packing rubber maid boxes with a laminated 'contents sheet' on top, stating what is in the box. Each box would have food, ammo, etc. There would be a simple label on the outside of each container (Food 1, Food 2, Tools 1, Medical 1, etc), and then a binder which has a duplicate laminated copy of each 'contents sheet'.
Therefore, if we need something, get the binder, see which box it's in, find that box, dig.
For a year's worth of food, for a family of 4 with 2 small children, and the eminent supplies needed when TSHTF, there may end up being 10+ totes, to be loaded on a trailer and convoyed out upon the need...
So how do you organize all this 'crap'? laugh

I load mine in 5 gal. buckets all marked 08,09,and 2010 on the lid so i know when they expire but when the shtf i shouldn't have to go any where. knock on wood. it takes up lots of room in the basement.

how many 5g do you have? Do they all have the same thing in them, or do you have to go digging to find stuff?

Totes don't waste space like the 5g pails do.

You might consider color coding the totes. Green for food, red for medical, black for arms, Yellow for clothing.

Why color coding? I was thinking just a piece of Duct Tape with "FOOD #1" written on it.

cahermit; lots of 5 gal buckets to be unclear...they stack nice . they all have a mix so i don't have to look for any thing it's all just food . my 5 gal buckets seal water tight. i could not find a water tight tote at wally world.ammo in ammo boxes. my stand is here at home unless a n.b.c. strike occurs or i take the fight to them. then the food is for my family.

i have both the totes and the 5 gal buckets..a couple are about 3 ft long and hold large things like 5 man tent and couple of army cots..the other is full of my grandfathers hand tools..saws planers measure devices etc..all my totes have gear in them no food items food goes in the buckets..as with you i did the list thing with my totes each item is on the list inside the top of the box a copy was put into a blue folder and each crate was just numbered..so if i am looking for a canteen i get the folder find which numbered crate its in and get in that crate..all my ammo is in ammo cans as well..and all this stuff has been brought from PA to WV and moved around 4-5 times since in WV..i dont plan on any bugout either under any reason..

Good to hear I have the right idea... anyone else category their stores as such? I would assume 5g buckets each have a good variety, as opposed to one food in each (veggies, dry, meats, etc)... I plan to have a 'day use' & 'camping' tote, as well, for regular use...
