Jericho - 06/11/2008 06:31 AM

My wife and I are currently watching the first season of the show "Jericho" one disk at a time from Netflix. I'd be curious to know what people here think is realistic and unrealistic about the show. For me, the most interesting thing is watching how stressful situations play on people's fears and cause them to turn on each other. Any observations?

No way the ratings were nearly as CBS said they were. I have a feeling DHS pressured them to pull the show for "national security" purposes.

Really? DHS taking shows off for national security... they'd better get to taking off survivorman and man vs wild lol. Y'know... come to think of it, that's a brilliant point, SGT. I'll have to think on that..

We watched it on netflix as well I think you gotta watch season 2 on the cbs.com web page. Season 2 is definately way too similar to our curent situation. A popular show about Americans resisting Martial Law and government sponsored terror groups. I am honestly shocked these folks aren't locked up in Guantanamo bay just for airing the show. It is phenomenal.

I liked it. Thought it was very telling of what could/will be coming down the road. I have yet to see a whole season in order...

The group that took over the town for awhile, said Blackwater to me.

I doubt the cell phone service would work after Nukes.

The "wireless" computer service is bunk - we don't even have it that good now.

All in all i think it was great. But most i suspect will only view it as a Hollywierd show, and ignore the future truths it tells.

Re: Jericho - 06/11/2008 07:08 PM

I found it interesting how they started with survival and preparedness but moved onto social/psychological issues. The external forces and stress to stay alive. I enjoyed it but would have enjoyed alittle more realism concerning living after a fallout. As far as the wireless, North Force, I believe it was a satellite system. The military has been using a system similar for some time. I did often wonder how a show that shows so many ideals contrary to current politically current ideas could even make it to tv.

Re: Jericho - 06/11/2008 08:46 PM

BW, I'm sure that's exactly why they took it off the air. It depicts: DHS personel behind a domestic terror plot, the necesity of the militia, the importance of the 2nd Amendment, the fact that Big Brother can't help everybody during an emergency, the problems with mercenaries in action on American soil, what happens when the corporatocracy takes over, the importance of a survivalist mindset, corrupt politicians & governments, etc...

All the things we're not supposed to think about.

Yeah, don't think about it, BL...you might have an aneurism like our buddy out in Kalifornia. ;-)

What's ironic is that Jericho was most likely taken off the air because it was too realistic, while all those lame "reality" TV shows continue to blather endlessly on.

Re: Jericho - 06/12/2008 08:12 AM

You are all right, the 2nd season is being released on disk tommorrow on amazon. It IS truly accurate on what is going on now. i might make the suggestion that everyone that feels this way about this awesome series should email or call the SCIFI channel and let them know thet you would like them to pick up the series, there WAS a petition online linked from CBS to the SCIFI channel to pick up the show. Last time I red it was 2 months ago and they had over 17,000 signnitures on it! Might be worth your time..

Shrike, by "pick up the series," do you mean that they would re-air the season 1 and season 2 episodes or that they would have a season 3 to air?

Got a link to the petition?

Re: Jericho - 06/21/2008 07:38 AM

I just watched the episode where they're handing out M16s off the back of a truck to "all able-bodied persons aged 16 and over." eek The scene where the one guy handed his daughter an M16 was choking me up a bit. When my daughters are old enough, they will not be strangers to semi-automatic, military-pattern long arms.

I'm still shocked to see things on this show that have been discussed on this board, e.g., should we acquire rifles in addition to our own MBLs for use by others.

I just finished season 1, and I can't believe how they left it hanging. Fortunately for me I don't have to wait several months to find out what happens as the first disc of season 2 should arrive early next week. I'm really tempted to ask what happens with the firefight and the train, but I think I can hold out until next week.

My wife and I really enjoyed watching it, was one of the only shows on TV worth watching. Will have to continue reading books now, there isn't anything worth a damn on TV now.

Re: Jericho - 06/23/2008 01:03 PM

My wife and I watched this on a regular basis. We liked to talk about current affairs and then compare / contrast our situations. It was pulled the first season only to be brought back due to public outcry to the CBS executives. Now it's pulled again? Someone doesn't want us watching.

Re: Jericho - 06/23/2008 02:56 PM

Well, they state several times in the first season that the FEMA camps are nightmares and that people are better off outside the camps. We can't have messages like that being broadcast on national TV fer cryin' out loud, now can we...? What would the sheep think?

In Jericho the catastrophe on the outside only comes to the town slowly, whereas in real life they would have been overrun with refugees on Day Two. The need for control of the routes into and out of town would have been forced upon Mayor Green almost immediately.

In Jericho, the organization of the Rangers takes a long time and is done without any pre-planning on anyone's part. This is ludicrous. A guy with Johnston Green's military and political experience (town mayors have to do a lot of planning for natural disaster contingencies which apply directly to the scenario) would have thought this through long before and worked out a way to implement a reserve deputy force (aka, mobilizing the unorganized militia) on Day One.

In Jericho, firearms are carried without bandoleers or web gear. They must have freaking deep pockets in those jeans. Also, at the end of the first season, Hawkins dips into his storage locker to hand out rifles and shotguns, but again, there is no provision for handing out ammo that matches the wide variety of weapons doled out. Nor any attempt to give the best weapons to the most experienced shooters. As in, "Were you in the servive? When? Ok, I'll give you what you know."

Also, the fighting positions which are constructed at the end of the first season in the big fight with New Bern are dangerously silly and laughably wrong. And these guys are supposed to be veterans?

And the final battle scenes are goofier than usual even for Hollywood. OK, let's forget about the idiocy of making a 120mm cannon on an Abrams accept and fire with accuracy an improvised mortar shell. But when Hawkins drives off the tank to meet the train, there's still a Ma Deuce .50 cal and an M240 (7.62 NATO) sitting on the top of it, supposedly without ammo. OK, but they've just hit the New Bern truck down the hill and the opponents have fled. Nobody thinks to traipse on down the hill and pick up the M60s and belted 7.62 NATO ammo that have been left behind? That would put the M240 back in action anyway. Arrgh!

On a positive note, in both seasons one and two, the character of young Dale, the grocery store stock boy who turns into an accomplished smuggler for the town is intriguing. No movement for liberty is complete without a competent smuggler, or class of smugglers. Reminds me of Hancock, Dr. Syn, Han Solo, Malcolm Reynolds, etc.

Re: Jericho - 07/10/2008 02:07 AM

One thing I have noticed about this thread is that all in all, Yes the Show was a great show, but more importantly, The Powers that be LOVE to give the Simpletons that watch these type of shows a glimpse of what they are really getting ready to do.

They Love to Rub our noses in it, saying " HA, This is what we are going to do to you and there is NOTHING You can do about it" Then they pull the show.

Same thing happened to a Mini Series called Amerika back in the 80's It was a short lived show, but it basically showed almost the same scenario.

I wish I could find someone willing to put the complete set on DVD. I have the Un Cut Commercial Free 12 hour collection on video tape.
