GREER, S.C. — Police departments nationwide are facing ammunition shortages and backorders with unknown delivery dates.

"It's never easy to get ammo, but since the tragedy in Connecticut, it's become even more difficult," Sgt. Chris Forrester of the Greer Police Department in South Carolina told WSPA -7.

The shortage is making Forrester rethink their qualifications and training for dozens of officers within the department.

"We’re having to be more conservative," he said.

Tens of thousands of rounds have been backordered for departments in Georgia as well, according to WSB-TV.

"It affects our ability to be prepared,” said Police Chief Terry Sult of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

"It affects the potential safety of the officers, because they're not as proficient as they should be."

WSB-TV reports that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office of Georgia was forced to reschedule training exercises as they scramble to restock ammunition.

An ammo supplier for Georgia police departments, Jay Wallace, said the shortage is a result of the huge spike in ammo and gun sales to civilians in recent weeks.

“There’s been more demand for ammunition than there’s ever been," Wallace said.

Sult stated that they are prepared to handle short-term shortages, but not long-term.

"We're going be starting to get very concerned at the six-month level if that's all we have in stock, because then we have to start planning and rationing," he said.

Yeah, sucks to be them. Too effin bad motherfuckers. What you get when your unions support war against the people.

You don't go to war with the army you wish you had, you go with the army you got.

Watch what happens though, they will demanding to get ammo issued to them out of emergency wartime ready reserve stocks but a lot of that stuff was used up in the sandbox.

Maybe they can "borrow" a few million rounds from DHS, with "no strings attached."

The smaller county Sheriff and police tend to be closer to the people they serve than the big city one's like LA California, so the smaller departments are not trusted.

I know deputies that were coincidentally sent on calls so they would be out of their normal patrol areas when the Fedcoats came in for ops, the deputies were screaming angry mad, on one such drug raid by the feds the neighbor to the house that got raided was a Re-Enactor with a APC the bastards stole the APC even though it had no connection what-so-ever to the alleged drug house.

Much of the equipment the sheriff department got from the feds was locked up under the court house where the eputies can not get to it, this includes the NBC gear they got, a lot of good a gas mask does when it is locked up and not in the patrol vehicle.

Really I am hearing paranoia coming from some of the smaller departments now.

Boo F***ing Hoo... They cant get ammo... This is what happens when the powers that be choose to wage war of the people and the people in turn buy everything they can to stock up before its all gone... This speaks volumes of the 7 Ps

Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance...

I don't know how your PD's have been lately but ours are looking pretty squirrely. Two car stops are routine and they are travelling in packs much more than I have seen before, IMHO many LEO's just like the military are going to have some hard and life changing decisions to make. I hope they choose wisely.

Like Imagrunt pointed out there is at least 1.6 Billion rounds DHS bought for the IRS, NOAA, the Postal Service, the Dept of Education, etc., etc. available - right?
I mean every good socialist knows how to share - right?
This may be better news than we know if the "balloon" goes-up soon.
And finally to quote Breacher, "too efin bad..."

There was a picture (like a cartoon really)in this guy's office that showed a repair man looking a bit flabbergasted with a caption that read "Your Lack Of Planning doesn't automatically Become My Emergency."

Perhaps some coppers will show some discretion with the citizens they so love to pull over and beat the crap out of so consistently if they're low on ammo.

Over one million Americans compete in shooting events each year, some burn through 50,000 to 70,000 rounds a year while others only a few hundred a month, averaged out to a thousand rounds a month that is still over 12 billion rounds a year, Lake City Ammo only sells 30% of it's production to the DOD each year , 70% is civilian sales, some sheriff and police departments are already short of training ammunition for their officers. Declaring war on the American competition shooter is not a good idea. smile smile

Yep, and that multi-million DHS contact for ammo has not been filled. They will not even get the next stages of that contract if funding is yanked as part of the "fiscal cliff" cascading government shutdown because it is a lower government priority than a lot of other things, unless the government makes it a priority, and then you will see them fighting every other agency for access to the ammo.

A Vermont gun range has banned the Burlington Police Department from using its facility after City Council voted to advance a proposed ban on semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. And given the fact that such facilities are limited in the area, the move could impact when and where officers can go target shooting.

This should be happening in every city across the nation. If you belong to a gun club or gun organization it's time to throw guberment troops out. I think every gun owner should start a dialogue with there club about being closed to all guberment officials. No ammo and no place to shoot goes a long way to let them know we aren't backing down this time. I know this means lost dues for the club but with all the recent gun purchases lately they should pick up new members and have full classes in no time.
