... Search and rescue operations are under way for the missing aircraft.

The flight had been due to arrive in Singapore at 08:30 (00:30GMT).

There were six foreigners on board the flight, reports say, three from South Korea and one each from the UK Malaysia and Singapore. The rest of the passengers were Indonesian.

An official with the transport ministry, Hadi Mustofa, told local media the plane lost contact over the Java Sea, between the islands of Kalimantan and Java.

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact and that the weather had been cloudy.

AirAsia have given few other details.

I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but losing three jetliners in a year sort of indicates that something just ain't right.

Three from the same region, two of them from the same carrier? I'd like to see the passenger and crew lists of the 3 planes combined to see if there was any common thread or trend.

Air traffic controllers denied the pilot\'s request to climb above storm clouds. As far as the Air Force goes, no peacetime mission justifies an aircraft flying into a thunderstorm. If an F-15 won't do it, why would a passenger airliner with 162 people on board?

Quote
SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — The plane sought permission to climb above threatening clouds. Air traffic control couldn't say yes immediately — there was no room. Six other commercial airliners were crowding the surrounding airspace, forcing AirAsia Flight 8501 to remain at a lower altitude.

Minutes later, the jet carrying 162 people was gone from the radar. No distress signal was issued. It is believed to have crashed into Indonesia's Java Sea on Sunday morning, but exactly what happened — and whether the plane's flight path played any role — won't be determined until after the aircraft is found.

Broad aerial surveys on Monday spotted two oily patches and objects in separate locations, but it's unknown whether any of it is related to the missing Airbus A320-200.

The plane left Surabaya, Indonesia, but vanished halfway into what should have been a two-hour hop to Singapore. Officials on Monday saw little reason to believe the flight met anything but a grim fate....

It looks like they found it. Six bodies have been recovered so far.
