I just saw this on a movie. Ever heard of/used one? Seemed like a good addition to the BOB, but probably not a water-filtration replacement. Takes up no space, and could save time in a hurry. http://giardiaclub.com/survival-water-filter-straw/index.php
Better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Survival straws are a good BACK-UP, but shouldn't be relied upon as your main system. Remember this does nt put the water into a canteen for use at a later time, it goes straight into your mouth. Carry 2-3 ounces of Clorox and use it.

Clorox? Wouldn't iodine be much safer? IDK

Iodine will work, but there have been some medical problems associated with it's use. Clorox is very capable of purifying water and it is MUCH cheaper. 4 drops will treat a quart of water. Double it if it is cloudy. Double it again if the water is below 45*F.
Just be careful that the container is leak proof.

As long as iodine isn't used on a long term basis you should be fine. What kills you is the build up of it, it hurts you after repeated exposure. Just liek lead is said to.
