Civil Unrest can take on many forms, from general discontent to full blown riots like the Watts Riots of 1966 or the LA riots of 1992. When the public at-large reaches a point where they feel action is necessary to right a wrong, protest a law, or gain restitution for a member of the community, full blown riots are often the result.

I have been in communities two times in my life during a riot. The first, in about 1969 or 70, I was very young and only remember the National Guard jeeps patrolling the neighborhood with machine guns after the 8 pm curfew. The second, in 1993, I was directly involved in being in law enforcement at the time. There are a few common things with almost all riots, and I'll share what I've learned with you here.

Amonymous has published a Survival Guide for Citizens in a Revolution . Since I'm more than a little leery of downloading something from a notorious group of admitted hackers, I haven't seen it. If you have, feel free to tell us what you think of it.

I suppose it's pretty good, if you're one of the people who have never thought about such things. I have to assume that most everyone here at AWRM will find this pretty much useless.

Thanks for posting that. Considering this group's reputation, I was not going to download anything from them.

I keep a throw away acer netbook connected to an open wireless network with no personal data on it for just such a thing. Should you run across anything else like it let me know and I will repeat the process.

Very basic, mostly common sense stuff for newbs. Might be ok for "clueless" family members... but I might edit a few parts.

Upon rereading it, I noticed something I should have caught right off. Did anyone else notice that, in the sections on preparation, they never mention acquiring a firearm or learning how to use one? In an article that is about self-defense, that's pretty astonishing.

I would say the Anonymous manual is easily on par with those SAS survival books.

You may or may not have noticed that the choice of wording lends itself to a British author. I'd imagine that the author didn't bother to bring up that which is so difficult to legally obtain in his home country. Regardless, as stated, the thing is fairly rudimentary, most likely aimed at the average Anonymous "member", lacking in even the basics of self preperatory know how.

The right to bear arms is that which separates a citizen from a subject.

When the SHTF, the clueless and unarmed will be looking to the cluefully armed. The LEOs will be hiding, awaiting .mil reinforcements.

Think of it as a training opportunity.

I would gladly lay aside the use of arms and settle matters by negotiation, but unless the whole will, the matter ends, and I take up my battle rifle, and thank God that He has put it within my grasp.

These new OWS protesters are facing a steep learning curve, and if this helps in places like NYC or Britain, then it beats nothing.

Perhaps AWRM could put something out, help their learning curve and perhaps keep them steered from the communists and Soros stooges of OWS.

This would be a fair manual to hand out to the new folks just starting out. The general recommendations are pretty decent. The preparation and self defense sections of the manual are deficient.

We have to remember too, that the OWS movement has always declared itself to be non violent. They have a definite bias against firearms.

I think that manual is their equivalent to the E1-E3 skill levels books used by various militaries. Like I said, it strikes me as similar to the SAS survival manuals but could also be like a modern lower level rendition of the CIA comic books that had been in circulation in Nicaragua in the 1980s.

The Occupy manual is more polished and a higher quality document than what has traditionally been used in the past by both governments and similar non-government groups.
