I like the "time capsule for liberty" thing.
I have been a survivalist for a couple decades by now and more than once my survival supplies and skills have gotten me by when had I been more "conventional" I probably would have just ended up helpless on the street. The trick though, is not to let your survivalism get in the way of regular successful day to day life, if a regular successful day to day life is honestly available to you and not some bullshit pipe dream that someone is selling you while you get pennies on the every dollar that you own as a wage/rent/tax slave who will end up with nothing when the shit hits the fan because "they" don't really care what happens to you.
Don't at all discount the kinds of people who would turn opportunivore in a hurry if SHTF and what they could manage to pull off after having scoped you out for years while pretending not to be listening when you were preaching survivalism, but they figured out that one .22 bullet to the back of your head means your preparations just became their preparations, or one slick little phone call to the right government agency means you get hauled away, and as your "true friend" they will go look after your family...
appropriately...
I can't stress how important it is to know who you can circle the wagons and establish your enclave with, and you need to be making those arrangements and connections NOW, not after SHTF. People's reputations are easy to check out now, but in the future, without the Internet, it can get increasingly difficult.
