I've always figured it depends on the situation. In most cases, it's probably best to stay put. But if your home is going to be under ten feet of water, or two armies are poised to use your back yard as a battle ground, it would be a good idea to get the heck out.

The important thing is to have a plan on where to bug out to, and make preparations (such as caches) in advance. My family had a primary destination, and a secondary destination in case the first was also untenable. The alternate was obviously less desirable, but doable.

If both bugout points were unusable, that would be a problem. This is where your survival skills and ability to adapt come into play. Whatever you do, stay out of refugee camps or FEMA centers.
