To be honest, something about this case has been bothering me from the very start. I picked up on it because it is truly an outrage if the state takes away your children because of a pot bust - which isn't even a crime in a few states now. And the press still seems eager to paint this couple as "anti-government," on the basis of a few posts on a gun board and a libertarian forum.

But the more I dug into it, the more bizarre the couple seems to be. Trust me, police are used to people acting strange, but ordinary people just don't create enough of a disturbance in a hotel room to have the police called, and they don't talk about taking "the ultimate journey to Armageddon." My personal threshold for calling Child Protective Services may be pretty high, but there is one, and if someone starts talking like that, I'd get a little worried.

And, well, ordinary people just don't set sail for Cuba and throw themselves to the mercy of a despotic communist government.

And the grandparents apparently have more information about the couple, though they wouldn't discuss it at their carefully-orchestrated press conference.

So, we'll just have to wait and see about this one. I still think taking the children away from them was wrong, but there may well be something else we don't know about yet.
