So it would make sense that the foremost group to engage a military force in any "martial law" scenario would have been the gunowners who had felt the first wave of arrests and searches, and their children rounded up at the school for detention, relocation, and reintegration with some outside care agency.

The scenario is also not nearly as unrealistic as you might think. Imagine state level gun control and gun confiscations taking place. The US Army being mobilized, but publicly trying hard to claim neutrality while every side in the brewing conflict is asking them to intervene.
