That's what his brothers said a few years later, when it was politically advantageous for them to do so. The truth is, Kennedy backed the coup that toppled and assassinated Ngo Dinh Diem, who opposed the U.S. military buildup in South Vietnam. Why would Kennedy have done so, if he didn't plan on staying in Vietnam?

I'm hardly a fan of LBJ, but I consider Kennedy possibly the most overrated president we've had (aside from Lincoln, of course). Kennedy got high marks for his handling of the Cuban missile crisis - but there would have been no crisis in the first place if he had followed through on his promise to supply air support for the Bay of Pigs invasion.
