Matthew Bracken knows what he's talking about. But we don't have to invade iran alone, and certainly we don't have to hit their strongpoints. I'd give odds we're already in contact with resistance groups in iran, and most likely arming and training them - That's what green Berets do. Same thing with the Kurds in northwestern Iran.
I've already heard reports, certainly unconfirmed, about Kurds attacking Iranian checkpoints,and of Iranians in Tehran and elsewhere attacking Basij forces. I suspect these operations are continuing, very quietly with no one talking about them. If conventional American troops are used, it should be only for specific, limited targets. We're never going to occupy all of Iran.
The mullahs and the IRGC are literally fighting for their lives. No other country is going to welcome them, and they are under no illusions about what the Iranian people will do to them if they lose power.
The trick will be to turn the Iranian Army against the IRGC, and I think we're probably closer to that happening than most people think. Once we make it clear the bombing won't stop until the job is finished, I think the Iranians themselves will finish it.
