Batya Ungar-Sargon put it succinctly off the top:
“Two days ago, he published a blood libel about the Jewish State.
‘Today, a man heeded his call. He picked up a screwdriver, shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ and stabbed two people outside a synagogue.”
She was referring to New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, of course, who has been leading the way in today’s antisemitism mega-virus.
It’s getting so strong that in this case the alleged perpetrator wasn’t even Muslim. He was just some crazy druggie picking up the popular racist rhetoric of the times coming from seemingly… everywhere.
Or as the
NY Post put it:
‘A deranged attacker yelling ‘Allahu Akbar’ stabbed two men in separate attacks on the Upper West Side Thursday afternoon, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
‘Investigators were probing whether the suspect, Raul Morales, 51, was motivated by hate, though Tisch also said: ‘The initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor.’
“Detectives are continuing to work the case and determine motive, but according to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled ‘Allahu Akbar,’ meaning ‘God is the greatest, ' in Arabic, during both attacks, the top cop said in a statement.’One of the victims was Asian, but the other was indeed Jewish, emerging from a synagogue attended by people with whom I am personally close, where they were celebrating the saddest of Jewish holidays
Although these may not be the greatest of crimes compared to others, these stabbings occurred on Tisha B’Av, which G-d declared a perpetual day of mourning for the Jewish people. That can sound like folklore, but the 9th of Av on the Jewish calendar is not only the day, hundreds of years apart, when the two Jewish Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed. It was also the same day the Jews were expelled from Spain after the Inquisition and the first day of World War I that many believe led inexorably to the Holocaust.
Go figure.
It’s hard to admit this, but we are now at a similar juncture. Jews are not safe around the world, but particularly in New York, a city to which they made huge, one could almost say unparalleled, contributions in finance, architecture, city planning, medicine, education, theater, music, radio and television, museums and art, and virtually every field of science and culture you can think of.
That’s indisputable.
But, ironically, it is time for the Jews to go.
They must leave New York not only to save it but also to save themselves.
Not all will do so. Some are too frightened or too embedded in fusty left-wing politics that has repeatedly failed.
But those who do go, not just titans of Wall Street but regular middle-class folks, will take with them such a significant portion of the city’s tax base that Mamdani’s not-so-Democratic Socialist goals will be more unattainable than they already are.
New York will no longer be the country's economic capital. Miami and/or Dallas will be, if they are not already.
Lessons might even be learned. Meanwhile, they can go be antisemites by themselves.
Living in Miami Beach, I can see this migration happening around me in real time. For a long time, when I have been talking to New York (and California) friends on the phone, they have been asking me, at first tentatively, what it’s like beyond their blue state bailiwicks. Now I detect an urgency in their voices.
At the higher end of the scale, following in the footsteps of Jared and Ivanka, we have this report about Jared’s father:
Lifelong New Yorker and real estate investor Charles Kushner is fleeing NYC for Florida because of, he says, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and First Lady Rama Duwaji’s antisemitism.
‘I don’t want to pay taxes and live in a city with a blatantly antisemitic mayor and his antisemitic wife, period,’ Kushner told The Post. ‘I also don’t want to live in the city with the people who voted for him.’
Regarding Rama, just how antisemitic is she? Olivia Reingold wrote for
The Free Press:
“In February 2024, a few months after The New York Times published an investigation into the sexual violence that occurred on October 7, 2023, Rama Duwaji, the wife of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, liked an Instagram post referring to the ‘mass rape’ hoax that was ‘fabricated’ by the paper.”
Nice folks, the Mamdanis.
Note to Zohran: Capitalist Miami Beach initiated a free rubber-tire trolley back in 2014, expanding it all over in 2017. You’re late to the party, comrade.
UPDATE: Some in the comments (restricted to paid subscribers) and others in email noted the great division within the Jewish community that I referred to briefly in the text and quite broadly in the illustration. It is an old story and a lethal one. Leftism is a kind of blindness to reality, which some grow out of but too many hold on to at their own peril. I highly recommend this article by Dan Greenfield on “The Night of the Murdered Poets.” The faces of those Soviet Union Jewish poets look all too familiar.
