As far as the larger debris a simple coffee filter or even a t-shirt will eliminate that crap before you even put the water in your berky.
The filters can be cleaned to a certain extent and short of actually breaking a ceramic filter should last for years even under heavy daily use. Cool! Thanks for saving me the typing effort!
