Hundreds of thousands march as global protests mark workers’ day of solidarity

Hundreds of thousands of people joined May Day marches across the world Saturday, as police and protestors clashed in debt-riven Greece and a bomb killed a World War II veteran in Russia.

In Athens several dozen youths, some armed with sticks, charged a line of anti-riot forces, prompting police to respond with tear gas as thousands of protestors swarmed the city to protest budget cuts forced by the debt crisis.

Police said about 15,000 people joined the Athens marches to vent anger at deep budget cuts which will hit public sector workers particularly hard.

"It's the biggest attack on workers for centuries. They want to return us to the nineteenth century," said one protestor, printer Ericos Finalis.

In the northern city of Thessaloniki, police also fired tear gas at youths who attacked banks and businesses using iron bars during a protest that police said drew about 5,000 people.

There were also clashes at a May Day march in the Chinese gambling mecca of Macau, where police used water cannon and pepper spray against hundreds of protestors who fought back with stones and bottles.


Tens of thousands filled a central square in Turkey's biggest city Istanbul for the first May Day celebrations at the site after dozens were killed there 33 years ago.

Waving colourful flags, the crowds marched into Taksim square, the hub of the sprawling city, and chanted: "Shoulder to shoulder against fascists."

The square had been declared off-limits since the bloodshed during a May Day rally there in 1977 when gunmen, believed to be far-right militants aided by members of the intelligence services, fired on a crowd, triggering mass panic.

In Russia, diehard Communists hoisted red flags and portraits of wartime leader Joseph Stalin in a throw-back to Soviet-era parades and joining unionists to bemoan the economic crisis and call for a return to communism.

An event in the country's restive North Caucasus region of Kabardino Balkaria was marred by a bomb blast that killed a 94-year-old veteran of World War II and injured nearly two dozen other people, according to news agencies.

May Day rallies also drew hundreds of thousands of people in several French cities although the turnout disappointed unions who had called for a massive show of force against pension reform.

In Ukraine, thousands chanted slogans such as "Socialism is our future", and in Serbia activists warned about the "worsening situation for workers" while in Romania opposition supporters in red shirts and caps targeted the government.

German police rounded up about 50 leftists overnight for various incidents in the lead up to May Day.

In Cuba, President Raul Castro presided over a May Day march staged as a show of unity in the face of what his government charges is a US and European-backed campaign to destroy the Cuban revolution.

The United States was meanwhile braced for demonstrations expected in more than 70 cities to protest at a tough new immigration law in Arizona that has triggered an outcry from rights groups.

In Hong Kong, several thousand protestors marched through the streets to demand a minimum wage of 33 dollars (4.20 US) per hour and better job protection.

Thousands marched through the Indonesian capital Jakarta demanding better social security and shouting "Today we unite" and "Stop oppression now." Some 15,000 security personnel stood guard, using water canon to suppress a scuffle near the palace.

The Indonesian social security system only covered about 25 percent of workers, Indonesian Workers Association head Saepul Tavip told AFP.

CHICAGO – Angered by a controversial Arizona immigration law, tens of thousands of protesters — including 50,000 alone in Los Angeles — rallied in cities nationwide demanding President Barack Obama tackle immigration reform immediately.

"I want to thank the governor of Arizona because she's awakened a sleeping giant," said labor organizer John Delgado who attended a rally in New York where authorities estimated 6,500 gathered.

From Los Angeles to Washington D.C., activists, families, students and even politicians marched, practiced civil disobedience and "came out" about their citizenship status in the name of rights for immigrants, including the estimated 12 million living illegally in the U.S.

Police said 50,000 rallied in Los Angeles where singer Gloria Estefan kicked off a massive downtown march. Estefan spoke in Spanish and English, proclaiming the United States is a nation of immigrants.

"We're good people," the Cuban-born singer said atop a flatbed truck. "We've given a lot to this country. This country has given a lot to us."

Public outcry, particularly among immigrant rights activists, has been building since last week when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the legislation last week. Supporters say the law is necessary because of the federal government's failure to secure the border, but critics contend it encourages racial profiling and is unconstitutional.

"It's racist," said Donna Sanchez, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen living in Chicago whose parents illegally crossed the Mexican border. "I have papers, but I want to help those who don't."

Organizers estimated about 20,000 gathered at a park on Chicago's West Side and marched, but police said about 8,000 turned out.

The event resembled something between a family festival — with food vendors pushing carts through the grass — and a political demonstration with protesters chanting "Si se puede," Spanish for "Yes we can." A group of undocumented students stood on a stage at the Chicago park and "came out" regarding their immigration status.

Juan Baca was among those students. Baca, 19, whose parents brought him from Mexico illegally when he was 4 months old, said he has had to drop out of college and work several times already because he can't qualify for financial aid.

"It's been a struggle," he said. "I missed the mark by four months. A lot of times you feel like you're not good enough."

Obama once promised to tackle immigration reform in his first 100 days, but has pushed back that timetable several times. He said this week that Congress may lack the "appetite" to take on immigration after going through a tough legislative year. However, Obama and Congress could address related issues, like boosting personnel and resources for border security, in spending bills this year.

"Obama promised legalization in the first 100 days," said Jesus Garzas, a 43-year-old Chicagoan with legal status who wore an Obama mask with a Pinocchio-like nose. "He lied."

Juan Haro, 80, was born and raised in Denver, where about 3,000 people rallied. He said his family is originally from Mexico and thinks Arizona's new law is targeting Mexicans specifically.

"This country doesn't seem to be anti-immigrant," he said. "It seems to be anti-Mexican."

At the White House, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, an Illinois Democrat, was arrested with several others in a demonstration of civil disobedience against the Arizona law.

In Dallas, police estimated at least 20,000 attended a Saturday rally.

Among them was Juan Hernandez, the Hispanic outreach coordinator for Sen. John McCain's unsuccessful presidential run. He said Arizona was once considered by those south of the border to be a model state with particularly close ties to Mexico.

"It went beyond what most states do," he said. "Now they are a state that goes beyond what the Constitution says you should do."

About a dozen people at the Dallas event carried signs depicting Brewer as a Nazi and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, known for his tough illegal immigration stance, as a Klansman. Organizers were asking sign holders to discard the placards.

In Ann Arbor, Mich., more than 500 people held a mock graduation ceremony for undocumented immigrant students near the site of Obama's University of Michigan commencement speech.

A smattering of counterprotesters showed up at rallies. In Tucson, Ariz., a few dozen people from the group Arizonans For Immigration Control showed up in support of the new law and Brewer.

May 1, also International Workers Day, is a traditional date for political demonstrations. Immigration advocates latched onto that tradition in 2006, when more than 1 million people across the country — half a million alone in Chicago — protested federal legislation that would have made being an illegal immigrant a felony. That legislation ultimately failed.

At Saturday's rallies, activists from organizations supporting other groups — including Muslims, gays and youth advocacy — marched in support of immigrant rights.

"It affects everyone," said Paulie Sabol, 38, who traveled from Indiana to march in Chicago. His partner is a Mexican immigrant who is a legal resident but doesn't have U.S. citizenship. "I can't sponsor him because same sex marriage isn't recognized in Indiana."

Immigration Riot breaks out in downtown Santa Cruz windows smashed fires set

SANTA CRUZ - A large group of protesters demonstrating at a May Day rally for worker's and immigrant rights downtown broke off into a riot vandalizing about a dozen businesses around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Many in the group were carrying makeshift torches as they marched, breaking storefront windows and writing "anarchist graffiti" on buildings, according to Capt. Steve Clark. Many businesses sustained multiple broken windows including very large storefront windows at Urban Outfitters and The Rittenhouse building. Police believe at least 15 businesses suffered damage.

The violence was initiated from a group holding a rally at the town clock for May Day. Windows at Jamba Juice and Velvet Underground were left shattered and graffiti including anarchy signs were tagged onto buildings.

Because of the size and violent demeanor of the crowd, Santa Cruz police asked for help from all agencies in the county to break up the riot. At one point, protesters lit a fire on the porch of Caffe Pergolesi and blocked access to firefighters, officers said. Police were able to clear out the demonstrators before more damage was caused.

A large rock sat outside Verizon Wireless on the 100 block of Cooper Street, where vandals tried to break the window twice, according to Clark.

"The damage that was caused was without purpose," Clark said. "It was senseless violence that victimized a community who cannot afford to be victimized in this manner. This did nothing to add credit to whatever they believed their cause was."

One person, 24-year-old Jimi Haynes, a transient from Fresno County, was arrested for felony vandalism for damaging a window. Haynes is also wanted on a parole violation, Clark said. Police are searching for others responsible for the damage. Protesters cleared the downtown area around midnight.

"Our entire team of investigators are processing the scene of violence for evidence," Clark said. "We will be looking at video available to try to ID who's responsible.

Haynes was observed traveling with this group and breaking windows at the Dell Williams Jewelry store. Haynes broke two large display windows in the front of the store. The witnesses followed him and called police. Haynes was located by arriving Watsonville PD officers who detained Haynes, Clark said.

Haynes is on parole out of Fresno County for burglary. He has been in Santa Cruz for the past several weeks where he has established an arrest history, Clark said. Haynes admitted to participating in the rally after receiving a flyer at a local anarchist café. Haynes was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

Once order was restored, police detectives worked throughout the night to collect evidence and document the damage to each of the businesses, Clark said. The police department guarded exposed storefronts, and arranged for private security to watch the businesses until windows could be boarded, and responsible persons contacted.

The police department encourages anyone with information (include any photos or video footage) to make contact and report the information. The police department will be working to identify and prosecute additional individuals involved in the march and subsequent violence.

Black-clad mob causes May Day mayhem in NC town

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Asheville police have arrested nearly a dozen people and accused them of taking part in a rampage through the downtown area, smashing windows.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports between 20 and 30 members of a group of masked, black-clad vandals were responsible for the downtown mayhem. The newspaper was one of several downtown businesses that had a front window smashed. Along with the windows, an automated teller machine was damaged at a bank.
The newspaper on Sunday reported that most of the people arrested on May Day were from eastern North Carolina and from out of state. They range in age from 17-26.
The suspects are due in court Monday. Most face charges of misdemeanor injury to personal property and injury to real property.

Imagine the uproar if 200 Tea Party members had gone on a rampage through a downtown city, smashing windows, starting fires, and spraying graffiti everywhere, the corporate media would be all over it, and yet gangs of pro-illegal immigration demonstrators do this and much worse on a regular basis, with no national news coverage whatsoever.
