Power companies prepare as solar storms set to hit Earth

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three large explosions from the Sun over the past few days have prompted U.S. government scientists to caution users of satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions over the next few days.

Could be interesting to see how it effects t-com considering Verizon's north East unions (CWA and IBEW) just called a strike as of midnight. :rolleyes:

NOAA predicts four "extreme" solar emissions this decade. Because, you know, we don't have enough to worry about already.

With solar activity expected to peak around 2013, the Sun is entering a particularly active time and big flares like the recent one will likely be common during the next few years.

Most solar flares will only cause minor problems with satellites and power grids, but a major flare in the mid-19th century blocked the nascent telegraph system, and some scientists believe that another such event is now overdue....
