Did you learn anything?

Something big is on the horizon for terrorist attacks, and it appears that these probing attacks on cyber/communications/emergency infrastructure are test runs for what they have in mind. Having the corrupt child sniffing dementia riddled puppet in the white house leaving the border wide open for 3 years has made this even more likely.

It has prompted me to get the family onboard with emergency comms. I live 20+ miles away on the edge of the suburbs and work near the urban center. For the first time my wife is actually receptive to me leaving a HT out and on a given frequency for a little used 1.25m repeater. If the lines are down, I can keep her up-to date on my whereabouts. I’d imagine 2m repeaters would be jammed with traffic. I also want to test to see how far we can get simplex reception. The new house is on a hill that overlooks much of the city, I suspect if I were to transmit from a hill in the city I’d be able to reach my home.

Time to procrastinate on these plans has passed.

Husker, if your on a hill put up an outdoor antenna hooked up to a 25 watt mobile. You'll be able to cover a fair distance from your home base station. If the grid goes down repeaters may not be online for very long. Simplex is the way to go.

People should learn from this event but most will go back to sleep five minutes later. Then when it happens again they freak out and expect da goobermit to save them.

I have a 25 watt mobile backpack rig, with a roll up j-pole that I can hang from the side of the house for simplex. The plan is to put up a 10’ tall comet base station antenna in the attic just above the garage with coax running the the wall to a jack by the workbench to plug the radio into. I figured that running simplex on 1.25m would be pretty “un-congested” to say the least.
