I generally store it the way I receive it, in ammo cans; or I load magazines and store them in (marked) ammo cans, or take loose rounds and put them on stripper clips or into magazines.
I keep the stripper clips, cardboards, bandoleers and guides that I get, and re-use them. Mike Vaderbough (SipseyStreet Irregulars) has some good ideas I think about how to store ammo (basically, ready to load into a weapon or as close as you can get). Loose rounds in a can is the worst way, since they aren't handy and can be damaged.
