Can't tell if the guy really did pop his wife and kid or someone else did the deed. Nor can it be certain if the guy didn't simply get a finishing shot off after they blew his little bunker up.

What can be determined is the guy was alone in a fixed fortification facing an enemy willing to use high explosives. He might as well have been Japanese on a Pacific island.

Fortifications have their place but your bunker better have a secret back door and you'd best not be alone.

Better yet, if he was in a community that supported each other, and he was framed up, this would be much less likely to have gone down like it did.
