There's been a lot made of that forty minutes on the ground, but I suspect the actual combat time could probably be measured in seconds. They certainly would not have given the people inside the compound very much time to react.

The rest of that forty minutes would have been spent identifying prisoners and bodies, gathering intelligence, and loading everything into the helicopter.

That's how it would have happened. Why the administration can't simply say that, rather than try to embellish the story (which really needs no embellishing) and then have to backtrack on it, is beyond me. As I said, it's amateurish.
