GOLIAD – Amid controversy and social media rumors of martial law being implemented, the U.S. Army's Jade Helm 15 realistic military training exercises scheduled to be held in Goliad and Victoria counties have been cancelled.

The Victoria County Sheriff's Office confirmed Thursday that the exercises had been cancelled.

The exercises were scheduled to be held from July 15 to Sept. 15.

Goliad County Judge Pat Calhoun and Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby said Thursday they had not yet been notified of the cancellation of the exercises.

The Goliad County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a request by the U.S. Army Special Operations Command to conduct military exercises in the county on Dec. 8.

Thomas Mead, operations planner for the training, told the commissioners that 60 to 65 military personnel would be involved in the exercises.

Jade Helm exercises were planned to be conducted in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. The exercises were also scheduled to be conducted in 14 other Texas locations.

Mead said the operations were to be held on Goliad County property owned by T. Michael O’Connor.

Conspiracy theorists hit social media with rumors of a military takeover in the designated areas.
