I convinced my wife to allow me to get a few more chicks. I have an aging flock, and a few frequently broody hens that are not the most reliable layers. I was able to reason to get that though we are over the county health department’s suburban limits… that we could easily be down a few hens any day, and with the 5 months it takes before the first eggs… it just made sense to be prepared. I’d rather have “too many eggs” at $10-12/dozen than be short and have to pay that. With food price inflation and impending shortages… it’s great to have home grown go-to meals that are not dipping into food storage and are self replenishing.
