The Day After came out in 1983, so the special effects are not the modern computer generated stuff people are used to now.

Nuclear bomb...atomic bomb = same thing.

The damage to the cities was caused by multiple detonations. Ever seen the documentaries of the Hiroshima and Nagisaki blasts? What both sides now use would make those weapons look like a toy. The film attempted to show the horrible effects of the US heartland being hit by 2-300 warheads.

There's nothing liberal about the movie. If you think that, then you missed the whole point of the film.
